Violin's Soul

In a Romani legend, a woman struck a bargain with the dark: she traded her family for a violin. Her father became the body. Her brothers, the strings. Their ribs, the neck. And she began to play. This figure is her reflection in the Polymorphic world: a dark violinist, long past regret.

Her violin is her father's ribs, gathered into a body and pressed where her heart should be — a stranger's bone over her own. The music is born in that gap. From the center of the instrument, two beings weave themselves out of black ribbons — ancestral spirits, family shadows, voices of those already in another dimension but still holding the thread. They smile. They know.

The bow moves apart from her hand. One of the spirits reaches for it with a long tongue, winds around it, guides it. She plays — but they sound.

Under ultraviolet light, the upper growths on her head ignite — by day barely visible, like horns that don't belong to her, only lent for the duration of the piece. In the dark, little remains: the teeth of all three and the spiral signs around them glow the same — a smile turned toward both worlds at once. The motif of "singing bones" exists in the folklore of many peoples: an instrument made of remains says what the living rarely dare to hear.
