Hatma Verta

Against a black ground — night-like, or subterranean — two bodies unfold in an embrace, male and female, glowing from within with the same green light as the vines and shoots wound around them. Their skin seems woven from the same substance as the surrounding growth: as if the figures had sprouted from this vegetation, or given birth to it themselves — the border between body and nature has been erased.

The scene can be read as a moment of intimacy, a fusion of two principles into one — or as their birth from one another, where it's unclear which is whose origin. The pose almost literally echoes the tantric iconography of yab-yum, where deity and consort are joined in embrace: not as an erotic subject in itself, but as an image of unity between opposing forces, each incomplete alone. His shaved head and inward, absent gaze recall Shiva the ascetic — still, withdrawn into himself, until his energy, his Shakti, appears beside him. She, in turn, is all motion: tangled, dreadlock-like strands fly around her face, as though the force she carries can't settle into a fixed form.
